Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) is a degree that focuses on the traditional medical practices of South Asia. Unani medicine has its roots in ancient Greek medicine but was developed and perfected by Arab physicians through experiments. Because of its contributions from the Middle East and South Asia, it is also known as Arabic or Islamic medicine. BUMS is a 5.5-year course that includes 4.5 years of core subjects and 1 year of internship. The course covers a range of therapies such as purification, Turkish bath, massage, diet therapy, use of herbs, and surgery.
To pursue a career in Unani medicine, one must complete BUMS, which is supervised by the Central Committee of Indian Medicine. Admission to this course is through NEET, and there are 1,706 seats available all over the country. The education and training of BUMS in India are regulated by the Central Commission of Medicine of India (CCIM), which is a statutory body under the AYUSH category
